Né à New York (USA) , Heiri Känzig vit maintenant aux environs de Zurich, Suisse. Il est l'un des rares musiciens de jazz européens à être représenté sur des labels américains, comme par exemple Verve (Vienna Art Orchestra, Helen Merill / Betty Carter), Blue Note (Thierry Lang Trio), CBS (NENA), RCA-BMG. Il a enregistré plus de 80 CD.

During this period he plays as well classical music as rock, popular music or jazz. En 1986 pianist Max Jendly encourages him to work mostly in jazz. This new orientation will give him the opportunity to work with new musicians, among thme pianist and composer Thierry Lang and trompet player Matthieu Michel with whom he records his first CDs on the Blue Note label. From then on he had many collaborations with: Mick Goodrick, Art Lande, John Taylor, Dewey Redman, Carlos Ward, Charlie Mariano, Lee Konitz, Ray Anderson, Paul mc Candless, Daniel Humair, Dewey Redman, Joe Lovano, Michael Brecker for the most famous ones... He also worked in the bands Diatonikachromatik by Daniel Perrin, Rosetta by Pierre-François Massy... He has been teaching at the Jazz Department of the Lausanne Conservatory since 2006 under managing from Georges Robert. He has also been teaching at the Jazz and modern music School in Lausanne since 1988. He works with guitarist Gérald Zbinden in studio with Daunick Lasro or Michel Doneda He also performs in a duo with drummer Alain Tissot From 88 to 96 he works with Lausanne big band (Yvan Ischer) with numerous musicians : Johnny Griffin, Harry Sweet Edison, Charles Schneider, Charles Papasoff, Toots Thielemans, Marvin Stamm, Fred Hersch...
